I have been reading through the pages over at Nominet and looking at becoming a TAG holder. What I cant figure out is that the prices stated on Nominet are 80 +VAT per domain. Now, when I use UKreg or 123-reg the prices are considerably lower than this.

I know there must be discounts for bulk buys but can anyone explain how to achieve prices comparable to 123-reg etc or are the benefits of being a TAG holder just the speed of registrations etc.

thanks

You also have to be a Nominet member to be able to reg domains at the wholesale price of 5 GBP + vat each. Non-members pay 94 GBP, which is fine if you only want to go after a couple of domains...ever, but expensive if you want several. Membership is a prerequisite if you want to 'get into catching', but more importantly you need a hot dog system to compete with the 'establishment' ;-)

yeah 5+vat is for the standard 2 years.

if you looking to buy lots of .co.uk domains (even if you dont catch them) i would sign up for membership on DAY ONE.

quite a few people test the water and end up buying names and then think about membership.

The problem they then encounter is that they dont see the membership fee as 500+vat (or whatever it is) they see that as 100 names.

They then have the tough choice of buying 100 names which might make them money, or buying membership which will save them money (in the long run).

if you have the funds and are looking to buy a lot of names (or catch a few) then get a tag and membership asap.

just my 2cents....

:)

thanks guys, very interesting comment deconstruction and I'm doing just as you have said. the water seems fine but its a good jump to stump up the 400 initial fee then 100 yearly membership.

couldn't i just transfer the names I have to my tag once I regsitered and prepared to take that leap?

sure, nothing to stop you getting a tag (which is free) now to secure the one you want.

then register names on 123-reg which is well priced.

then if you decide to take the plunge move all your names from 123-reg to your tag.

while we are on the subject of tags etc, are there any tag holders / members who buy there own names. But also buy names for other domain traders (until they feel ready to get their own tag)

i dont see any benifit in doing so, just curious if anyone does :)
