Best way to redisgn site whilst keeping the old one live?

Any ideas?

Ben

No one? I will try to explain myself a bit better...

I currently have a website i would like to redesign. The site has about 40 pages including a phpbb forum. This was all hand coded in notepad.

I would like to redesign the site, and also add another 50+ pages. Im unsure whether to use a CMS when redesigning.

What is the best way to keep the current site live? What is the best way to make new site "live" when it is ready?

i would buy another domain , ask your ISP to copy from Domain A to Domain B and then continue working on domain B then once all is fine just ask ISP to move Domain B content to domain A

Copy all your files, upload them onto your server under a different domain name, and re-design the site.

Leave the original site up, when you have finished re-designing the new site upload all the files back onto the original name, using FTP, if you keep the file names the same they will just replace the originals with the new ones and the added pages will just get added.

I am moving all my sites to Joomla.

I simply install Joomla alongside my existing site. - Do the redesign using the Joomla - delete the index.html - straight away you are in action with no downtime.

Have you not got a test server on your own PC? Surely that's the best way for you to complete the transition in stages, do a bit of re-design, test it, upload, do more re-design, etc until you're done!
