Although I have no way of proving it I believe this happened to me as well. I guess a better way of checking the whois would be through DOS. You can download a useful object from here:

http://www.softgears.com/winwhois.html

Then just Start-> RUN -> cmd -> whois xxxx.co.uk -> enter

Hard luck on that one, it's gutting I know. I regged the xxxxx.co.uk and held fire on regging the .com version of the same name. The name was totally unique, nothing had been in the news about it etc so there was no reason why anone would reg it. When I checked to reg the .com the next morning, the name was gone. All I can suggest is if the names are really that valuable then become a registrant agent yourself.
