Received an email yesterday from what looked the company that I have a few domains and my hosting with.
The email said they’d had problems charging my bank account for the renewal of a domain.
First of all the email didn’t address me by name which the genuine company do all of the time.
Checked my bank, no problem there.
Checked the renewal date and that is in 6 months time. So definitely a scam.
I thought how far I could take it and clicked on one of the links in the email to ‘pay now and avoid any service disruption’.
The link took me to a very genuine login page and I used a made up email address and password. Clicking on enter I was taken to a form with the domain in question highlighted and the amount to pay.
Sent the email with full header to my provider and they confirmed that they’d had several reports about this already and was doing what they could with the scammers site and hosting company.
I suppose this could be an easy scam to fall for if you’re rushing, tired or unsure of the expiry date of every domain you hold. I know l’m probably preaching to the converted but I just wanted to get this out there for you.
