I'm looking to develop a directory type website and have a great generic domain covering a perfect category for development, (thanks buffalo ;) ).

Being new to .org.uk domain. My question; is it possible to develop a brand around a .org.uk domain? Has this been achieved by any forum members? I'd like to find an example of a directory type site developed using a .org.uk.

Does the .org.uk domain kill conversion rates? Is .org.uk only effective for charity type sites?

Building a brand is mega money and around a org.uk would be throwing it away as you’d lose out to the co.uk as that’s what most people remember ? Directory sites have taken a hammering from “g” (could be because by there very nature having unique content is difficult) but you can list org’uk well atm at least “g” seams ok with them and you can make money from a directory but from experience when your trying to get clients to advertise anything other than com or co.uk does create a hurdle...

Directory or personal project = no problem

Brand is a no go

Branded .org.uks' are exceptions, it's .co.uk (& .com) as a rule.

Last resort, unless it's a not for profit entity.
So a directory would be OK if it's say "woodland management" or "boy scouts" etc.

Thanks for the feedback.

I now have an opportunity to purchase a related and often used keyword .com domain, but the term has very little exact search traffic. The .com would work as a brand but has no EMD value.

Would it be a good idea to develop the .org.uk into a blog type site with 18,000+ exact searches per month and then heavily promote the .com directory within this blog site.

I understand this would mean a lot more work, but if the EMD returns good SERP traffic would this be advisable?

Google 'currently' gives EMDs a SERPs boost but you can't rely on that still being the case for the future. A brand that sticks in people's heads will remain long after any algo changes.
