Does anyone have any recommendations for free fully functioning email checkers - that performs some basic validation on the emails. I'm too lazy to pass through a script and write a reg expression.

I'm sure campaign monitor and mailchimp both have a validation script which checks for valid pattern and valid dns records etc. Been awhile since I needed to validate as I use double opt in usually.
