If they still have the original registration date then someone has done an illegal swap with your ISP/registrar otherwise something has gone wrong somewhere.
Might be worth speaking to Nominet to clarify.
For those of you who have been following this thread, I confirm that I have gone through this matter with a fine tooth comb this morning and the matter is not as it originally seemed to be. Nominet are NOT at fault, and nobody has got hold of a domain that they weren't entitled to.
My conclusion on Saturday that something had gone wrong was caused by a fault in the search function of one of my apps. If, for instance, one is trying to find "clowns.uk", then a search for "clowns" will find it but (strangely) a search for "clowns.uk" won't. Not being able to find those domains inevitably led me to incorrect conclusions as to what had happened to them in the period around their expiry dates.
I have deleted all my earlier posts in this thread, as I think it's best to close the lid on a false alarm as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, many thanks for your expressions of concern, especially (in order of posting!) @stevelook2 , @sigh , @dropcycle and @Siusaidh .
