I'd be interested to hear any thoughts on the most effective ways of generating an income...

An example of our sites can be seen on www.Cardiff.co.uk.

We're thinking about implementing some ads (Adwords / banner ads) into our network of 18 city sites, and roll them out at the same time that we improve the SEO and implement the URL re-writes.

As the sites are a bespoke build from scratch, there is nothing that the team can't do (subject to time/money) so any thoughts 'outside the box' would be interesting to hear too.

Thanks, Phil

Nice domain; I would love to own mycity .co.uk.

You could maybe have featured listings and charge for it? And if there are any big brands being promoted on the site, add an affiliate link to their website if they run an affiliate programme.

Local job advertising is big £

Get it into google news also as a good link and viral tool for local news and promotion. If you need tips on that drop me a pm

Ok, if your ever looking to sell it, make sure you talk to the local news paper.

As for development, as people have said, anything geo related. Taxi firms, hotels, restaurants, train station, bus station, news, football team, jobs is great, maybe local chat (a forum?) everything and anything.

Presumably you have seen the emergence of these local / group buying deals sites. Groupon ?

So either do something similar or affiliate with them.

Assuming you already have the traffic sorted (news, community, reviews, comps), I would be concentrating on direct sales, "advertorials" like you see in newspapers, thats sort of thing. Local SEO is big business now.

Maybe get a sales team on a commission only basis and just get them to go through the yellow pages to try and sell ads / listings.

Fantastic name, good luck with it.
