Also the general way seems to be that the person gives you the catch TAG before the catch date so you can see if you've ended getting it.

Yep, get the tag name and commitment from them first; just so they can't turn around and say "yep, already had that listed for myself".

I usually tell people the first or last letter of domains I already have listed for myself, if it matches theres, I tell them how many words mine is, and narrow it down. Its a long winded way, but means I can protect what I have and they can protect what they have, worked out well thus far
