do people actually ever buy names when they request a wanted domain or do they just fish for names. I am just wondering and dont mean to offend....

List farmers only get away with it once as far as I'm concerned...
I'd say it's best to look at DT rating or number of posts to guage the level of forum commitment...
That said, with relative newbies, you have to give way to opportunity - hence my first comment...
Sadly, it is a fact that some folks don't even have the common courtesy to reply... Recall a request for adult domains one time a few months back, as a case in point...

What are "list farmers" trying to achieve? Just adding the domains to their system to catch if they ever drop? Or registering similar domains, or with a different extension?

Word spinners, singular, plurals, niche ideas, e & i variants etc, etc...
Just adding the domains to their system to catch if they ever drop?
They usually use drop lists for that using similar criteria above...
Or registering similar domains, or with a different extension?
Some of these can actually be worth more than the extn presented...
Same can happen when you post a name for sale too, so make sure you covered your bases if it's a good name...

The Problem with requesting domains
Hi, We have posted a number of requests over the last 2 weeks and bought 10 decent name. The problem with posting a request is that a. most of the domains proposed aren't relevant and b. the prices are frequently high.
One example was superfoods.co.uk which we would have liked. We missed it on a BIN at £550 a week or so ago and we've just had it proposed to us at £3500.
We have managed to find a list of 6 vendors whom we can deal with easily and reliably.
And one thing we don't like is the high level of distrust that there is from many vendors to purchasers. There is one recent example when we sent a cheque (the vendor wouldn't take chaps) and the vendor cashed the cheque. I asked that (for testing reasons) they point the domain at our webserver and they refused until the cheque was cleared. This is really unpalable to me - especially as the cheque is from a plc.
In any event we have decided to limit severely who we will deal with and when possible get a free reg. We are looking for 20 new names per week. It would take us 2-3 weeks to buy 20 names and probably longer if we didn't want to overpay.
Just my thoughts...

A good place to look to help determine who is worth dealing with, is the Acorn Domain Trader area...
Also, as some are reluctant to publicise sales etc, I'd suggest you look at levels of commitment to the forum from individual members...
Also, bear in mind, TAG holders are on here too...

That said, you will find that a large number of 'Acorn stalwarts' are tired of time being wasted from less serious individuals...

I just think it's a real shame that acquiring a domain isn't easier. People don't publicise prices - hardly anyone has a price list. You have to wade through a list of 1000 domains of which 800 are like mymotherwasanalien.co.uk. You then get the 200 that might be half useful. You find something like alienmums that you want and get told that it's £2000 because it gets great sedo parking revenue. So I just wasted a few hours on this exercise.
I want to find a name and buy.
It's far better to look for domains using domain toools whois and then request if they are for sale. You might only get a 1 in 5 hit rate but you a. get a better name and b. don't have to deal with a lot of the rubbish. This is quick and easy.
