UK charities took a total of £11b last year of which they spent between £2.5 to £3 billion on getting that money in (TV, internet, print media, telesales, support services etc, etc..) There are plenty of affiliate programs for charity donations, gifts etc..

I would be building a site to encourage people to donate and helping them find the right charity.

This is a well discussed argument over at the affiliate forum but the upshot is charities want to pay you for your ability to make them money.

Newspaper, TV, magazine and billboard ads etc all cost money, charities don't get them for free. So does their electricity supply, gas supply and telephone costs etc. The bottom line is literally the bottom line. If they make more money from it they are happy. You aren't taking money away, you are making them money.

As a valuation of the domain I would agree with Lee, reg fee.

Supporting charities is commendable, and if you setup a site to do that then I think fair reward for the effort is due, but not commercial profit.

Since the government cunningly introduced a voluntary tax on stupid/greeedy people, charity donations have declined.

I still believe that non-profit and voluntary organisations serve the needs of good causes far better the elite board who have hoarded billions, now destined for the london 2012 black hole.

I would quietly donate this domain to a charitable body that will make use of it, unless you are motivated to help charities.

personally i would set up the site, but not use affiliate links for the charities.

i would then place other ads on the site to generate the income, eg other affiliate links (not adwords)

everyone wins, everyone's happy.

i know you said its not for sale, but if you change your mind drop me a pm, i have quite a few charity names which i plan to develop at some point into a similar site as the one you might be thinking of...

Lets not forget that most large scale charities are now simply money making machines who happen to spend a part of their earnings on charitable projects. They also spend millions on adverts, offices, travel etc. Spending on a domain name would easily fit within their marketing budgets.

And the less they have to spend on bringing the cash in, the more of that cash goes to where its needed.

Develop the site by all means but to make money off the back of a charity gives me the shivers.

I also wouldn;t try and make money off them, but do recognise what they are. I don't know if you've read about the Red Cross trying to sue Johnson and Johnson for using a red cross as their logo?

The fact that J&J used it as a logo before the Red Cross was even formed, and granted the Red Cross a free license for their normal actvities didn;t matter to the RC. They then sub-licensed to direct competitors of J&J (against the terms of the license agreement). And THEN they try and sue!

When that was all being discussed around the net, a fair bit is revealed about the RC.

Didn't want to get into an ethical debate, all I wanted was peoples views as to it's value.

If charities don't get their message out to people then they don't exist it's as simple as that.

Agreed. Not the place. BUT don't give it away for a low price with some theory that it helps the charities.

I think it's good and valuable... to the right buyer.

Value is a tricky one as it is a bit of a mine field and might actually be difficult to monetise, but it’s still a good generic domain in a large wealthy sector I’m sure some one would be happy to pay £6k+

A charirtchoice type site is exactly what I have planned for it, but I hope it will be a little more up-to-date and allow some of the smaller charities to gain a better exposure. Well that's the plan anyway.

I would have loved to get it for that but had to pay more than twice that
