An aggressive price promotion in China of website domain names with the ".cn" top-level domain helped quadruple the number of websites using the suffix, according to the company that operates many of the web's core directories.

The price promotion — which reduced the fee to register a website domain name to approximately 14 cents Cdn for the first year — led to a 402 per cent growth in domain names registered with ".cn" from the previous year.

The top-level domain ".com" remained the most popular, with Germany's ".de" and ".net" the second and third most popular. China's ".cn" moved into the number five position, just behind the United Kingdom's ".uk."

The aggressive expansion of a TLD by low pricing is a dangerous technique. It doesn't exactly get the TLD a good name and frequently ends up with the TLD being used for disposable domain names by spammers and other assorted low lifes. It also gives an artificial view of the health of a TLD as many people who really don't have a clue (technology journalists in particular) tend to use the domain count in a TLD as an indicator of the health of a TLD.

Considering populations and economic growth, I suspect the UK will find its rightful current place in the world sooner rather than later, but don't get me started on why the west is so bothered about conning people about global warming and our carbon footprint...
