I don't buy .com's usually but have just agreed a 5 figure sum for a .com though a brokerage. The brokerage is Rockwell Park Enterprises and the domain is with Enom.

Has anyone dealt with them?

They suggest I create an Enom Central account to push the domain into my account. Is this a reasonable way of doing it and can anyone suggest how best to protect myself.

That's by far the easiest and quickest way of doing things. You can always *transfer out to another registrar once you have control of the name.

*I think they (Enom) have a short lock down period of between 7 days and 2 months following a push, before you can transfer out to another registrar. This is done in case an account there is ever hacked - slows down the speed a hacker can transfer the domain(s) out to another registrar, at which point it becomes a much harder task to recover it/them.

P.S. Would be advisable to use Escrow.com for a transaction that big, unless you know them.

If the buyer wants to pay via paypal, ecop.com is a good alternative escrow service as well.
