I received an email the other day from 1and1 regarding my pre-approved payments via paypal for domains i have with them, they wanted me to raise my monthly limit.

I followed their instructions for the update and once complete when back to my account admin to check, they had increased my monthyl maximum allowance they can take from paypal to £70,350 ..... No joke, needless to say i have cancelled my paypal account with them and demanded an explanation for the absurd figure.

Total madness

What you crying for ? it's only pocket money

Seriously, that is a huge amount

When I read the title...Crazy Request for £70,350..

No its genuine, i spoke to them only 5 minutes ago; a totally nonchalant response, no apology, they simply said we'll cancel your paypal account and you can set it up again. I have 182 packages (with several domains in each) so its not like im a small customer. Very poor customer service :?

Why are you still with them mate, you must know by now that there customer service is taking the pee

Plus with those types of numbers for domains why don't you become a nom member and get your own server. I'm happily running my own dedicated server at a datacentre for less than £30 a month.

A local company called serversure.net based in Sheffield.

I paid £300 for a new server to be built, but it's mine 100% then just locate it at their datacentre for £30 a month. Never had one issue and it's the same spec and everything. It's basically the same spec and service that I was paying £140 a month for.

If you have a normal desktop tower you can locate that with that with them, not just a typical server.

I suppose there are offers on this all around the country if you search for a "geo data centre" you should find some massive savings. I'm saving £110 a month.

All the best
Graeme

Vote with your feet and go elsewhere.

Strangely I got a letter from 1&1 the other day saying my credit card details had expired and that I needed to update them. Strangest thing of all, I've never used them. The address was mine, but the letter was addressed to someone completely different.

I recently tried to move a domain to 123-reg from 1and1 but somehow KEY-SYSTEMS-DE ended up in the name tag, whoever they are. They're denying any involvement of course :-?

I know you are aware of the full details Graeme, but just incase anyone thinks this is a sure fire way to save money, dont forget with colo you are responsible for any hardware issues. So when the PSU goes bang on a sunday at 3AM, its your problem to find a spare and either drive to the DC and fix or pay for remote hands to fix (and then find it took the MoBo with it too).
Also a lot of colo providers will need you to be insured agains all risks. (eg you setting the fire supression off (think £xx,xxx bill) when a part blows, or someone getting hurt by your server). This insurance can push the monthly up or you assume the risk personally.
It can work out not much more money to just get a dedicated server with a decent provider.
So if you think you need a dedicated server ensure you fully think through all the liabilities you are getting yourself into.

But of course once you have your server and need any help with the admin give me a shout. Good prices ;)

I would definitely transfer your domains out from 1and1 they are a bunch of cowboys. I had an absolute nightmare with them billing me for expired domains, accounts that didn't exist and making me jump through a silly amount of hoops to initiate the transfer out, they then still tried to bill me lol.

I would recommend daily.co.uk and domainmonster.com for uk and eu domains. I occasionally use eurodns.com as well for either obscure domains or if they have a decent offer running.

Namecheap for everything else, good prices on .com/org/net etc great cpanel and they are simply fantastic to deal with.
