Having been frustrated recently by lack of interest in my domains, I just checked out the http://www.acorndomains.co.uk/domain-name-offers-invited.html forum.

Looking at the page as it stands at the moment, apart from 1 exception it consists of sales threads where the original poster has either generated no interest or has bumped the thread themselves.

It seems like most of us are deluding ourselves by continuing to register / catch mid-range names simply on the off-chance we might sell them on. I already developed nearly 500 of the names into sites, and still earn some reasonable cash through parking. Over the next couple of years I imagine i will be letting go 80 per cent of the rest of my portfolio unless anything changes the market as it now stands.

Is anybody optimisitc about the future?

There is alot of tat in there :(

It would be interesting to know how many are fresh regs.

I am, of my circa 100 domain portfolio I just sold 3 domains which paid for the renewals for the next 4 years at least :D

We've had 5 end-user sales, averaging well over £1k each, in the last 7 days. Several potential enquiries on the go as well. Busiest it's been for months...

On your other point, I'd say without a shadow of a doubt the quality of names being posted for sale here is dropping practically day by day, so it's hardly surprising not much is moving on Acorn at the moment!

Well that is good news - can you send some of your customers my way too!

I was looking at the Nominet register growth stats the other day - http://www.nominet.org.uk/intelligence/statistics/registration/ - thinking that there must be a chance that the uk registry was close to its peak or might even be contracting a bit. However surprised that growth looks as stong (stronger?) than ever with 10% annual growth rate. Would be interesting to know where the growth is coming from?

Stephen.

There seem to be a few names that go through the following threads on Acorn

Last Name registered > Domain Appraisal > Offers Invited

Judging from the intro forum... at least some of that growth is coming from "newbies" :)

Na... go see what I just posted in the offers invited section

Even if 1 per cent of the growth was, that would be 100,000 domain names. And judging by the way some established portfolio holders are slimming down their holdings I would imagine that might be evened out.

The for sale sections on here are becoming more like a recycling centre.

I have not yet worked out why, but I bet theres a good reason why there is a lack of quality names being touted.

One pattern that I've noticed is people starting 4-5 sales threads a day, one per sales forum, day after day after day. The net effect is that they have literally dozens and dozens of sales "open" (and ready to bump) at any one time.

There really should be much stricter posting limits, per day (across all sales forums) and per week (total posts in any sales forum), and also the "bump" function needs to be put out to pasture, if there's to be any chance of a swing back towards higher-quality listings in the sales forums...

You're looking for £60k for a 3 org.uk's - Are you suggesting this isn't deluded?

To put them in contrast, poker.org.uk sold for £25k, creditcards.org.uk for £20k.

Na... cos I'd rather SEO in the cruise sector any day of the week than credit cards and poker

The combined foot hold those 3 will give me/someone in the 1 niche is worth £60k all day long.

Its not delusion, perhaps ideas of grandeur but the reality is it will be me making another £xx,xxx a month off another niche next year if I dont sell them to someone with enough foresight to pony up or make a sensible offer.

You can look at what you've outlined as akin to trawler fishing, you pull the fish in and sort the ones you are keeping, the valuable ones, and the rest you put back. The only difference with domains is you can be selective about what you pull in in the first place, and when carpetcompany.co.uk sells for nearly $5000 as it did this week according to dnjournal, no one with experience who looks at quality domains is deluding themselves about potential values.
