domain name expiration

I have just found a domain which would be great for my new "idea" but it's taken. It's a .co.uk and is now in renewal status (domain expired 16th sept), anyways I have read and been told it's 99 days from the domain expiration to being able to register it again.

Is this true? Is it possible to grab it before without contacting the owners? How much would a domain catching service be?

Cheers, that's helpful... I used their who.is (which uses nic) to check the details (cos I am nosy) and it brings up the following

Registered on: 27-Oct-1999
Renewal date: 27-Oct-2005
Last updated: 05-Sep-2002

but if I do it on who.is then I get the following

Registered on: 16-Sep-2006
Renewal date: 16-Sep-2010
Last updated: 15-Jul-2010

The system above says it's free to register but a check on 123-reg shows that the domain is taken.

Is this just out of date information?

I don't use their whois, just the drop date calculator (its just 90 days from renewal date)

The domain will drop (and become available) on the 17th of december. Book it with public catchers if you can (some need suspended status i think)
