Have just completed negotiations for a domain and tallied up the email count: 77! Add on a fair few phone calls, bank transfers, sleepless nights, etc. Was wondering what lengths everyone else has gone to, to get a name close to their hearts?

Counting the emails to get sedo to finish the deal doesn't count you know.
Seriously though, well done and hope the domain / payout warranted your time and patience.

Never kept that close a tally, but I'm guessing about 20-25 emails must be my most complex sales deal. The amount of effort sadly doesn't correlate to the amount of return very well - some of the most hard to manage clients have been those buying relatively cheap names...
On the buy side, probably no more than 10 emails for any one name (although there's one I've still not got where I'm up to at least 20 emails I'm guessing, over several years).

Any more than 10 starts to cut into my profit margins. I will negotiate longer if the buyer is not using a free email address though.
Free email address users the sale goes like this:
Buyer: I need a domain for a personal project and found that you are not using yours. Would you be interested in selling it?.
Me: (Bearing in mind that the price is on the site where the domain is parked) - Thanks for your interest, however as this is for a personal project, I suspect that you cant afford it. You should try ebay.
Buyer: I can offer £20, that is more than you paid and you are not even using it.
Me: For pocket money domains you really should try eBay. We only deal with premium organisations who understand the value of brand and are serious about their companies future on the internet.
Buyer: I am interested, would you take £1000 for it.
Me: Ask yourself how much would you pay for this domain if your best competitor bought it. Perhaps 6 months or a year from now you will see this domain on a website turning over hundreds of thousands, and you will be kicking yourself knowing that it could have been you with all the nice cars, girls and lovely home. Understand that we don't just sell domain names we sell futures. If you are coming to me with such poor offers then what would you do in my position?
I dont want to waste either of our time here, have a think about it and come back to me with something closer to the asking price of £10k and then can discuss it more.
If it is out of your budget then dont be afraid to say so, not everyone can afford premium names, its nothing to be ashamed of.

Had one for a sale to a european company, and the things they wanted from me... documentation, vat, company reg, inside leg etc was astonishing. Only a low-end xxx deal as well. Most of the stuff was irrelevent for uk purposes and to them as well, they were treating me as if I was a subbie for them. Over 20 emails over 4-5weeks!
In the end I told them effectively to put up or shut up... here's my payment & transfer details. If you want it sort it. Went through in a day!

funnily enough the most straight forward buyers I have had are French and Italian out of Europe

I had some guy send me a picture of him in a hospital bed telling me that he has been in a coma for 2 years and the domain expired and he wants it back and that I should look deep inside and thank god for my health, and hand the domain back. (from Florida, US)
However the domain was owned by a company in Germany previously.
So I sent him back a picture of someone standing next to a Rolls Royce drinking champagne saying, well I don't know who to thank, but this domain is making me rich.
(I later sold it for £500 to a company in Germany - not the same one)

"I've spoken to my accountant and he says it's overpriced so I'm backing out of the deal"
So true - got almost exactly that response yesterday from a would-be buyer getting cold feet when I chased them to find out where their payment was.

My accountant fears my accounts each year as they have no idea as to how the industry works, despite working with them for 4 years now. Hell I still don't understand it and I have been at it since 1998
