"Domain tasting" - Is this old news?

Excuse my ignorance - is this old news? I gather it involves registering a dropped domain - monitoring traffic over the first 4 days - and then deciding whether to pay or cancel. So if it's no good the domain can be dropped without incurring any cost.

Happened with a .org I owned which I allowed to drop, it was snatched up and the catcher offered to sell me it back for $500. I didn't reply to the email and the domain was dropped again a few days later.

Still free I believe.

Rules are different for com net org etc.

You mean "testing" or "tasting" Actually both are correct. Testing are done by some dropcatchers (not me) as you said. Tasting is also done by some dropcacthers for crappy names. You can go to deleting.co.uk and look at "who's got what" section to understand what I mean by tasting.
