I'm looking for an idiots guide on transferring domain names to someone when selling a domain.

I need to know things like who should pay what, at which stage of the process can payment safely take place, and stuff like that.

Obviously, there are different procedures for .uk and .com domains and I'd like info on both.

Any suggestions, advice etc would be appreciated.

.UK guide:

Transfer procedure for TLDs is much easier.

If you are staying with the same registrar you can "push" the domain to another user.

If you are transfering the domain to another registrar the domain will need to be unlocked first, you will then need to give the new registrar the "auth code" to transfer the domain in, this generally requires a years renewal fee.

Thanks for this info.

If you are transferring the domain (after a sale) to another registrar, who pays the renewal fee? Buyer or seller?

Thanks. Buyer pays.

I've only sold through Sedo and not that often - but plan to have a go at this myself.
