donate now or later?

I know the admin here runs a very open policy here about "donations" and tries to stick to the definition of a optional contribution.

but "donation if i sell" seems a really flawed idea to me. In order to generate the diverse lists posted DAILY admin (and other list contributors) have to run through millions of possible combinations, maintain and monitor the database, the whois records and this forum for the benefit of US to put extra cash in our pockets.

the value of domains are personal so if you register one you personally might see some value that someone else doesn’t But if you maintained and monitor you own lists you either have to run your own TAG (£800 or something) or use a dropcatching service (£30 - £60) a time to make sure you get the domain because you can see the value in it.

The lists here are completely free and i just think if you register a domain you should contribute a small amount for the effort taken to find and monitor it as well as your perceived potential value of it in the future.

Its all a gamble it just seems to not pay some kind "entry fee" and have a free roll of the dice - wrong? if you win or not is irrelevant at this stage (unless your donating 80% of your winnings )

I would go via the general rule of donate when you register a name off one of acorndomains' lists and then if you are lucky enought to sell it then donate another whack to acorn.

As with registering off lists there is no skill involved and your good fortune is largely todo with the generosity of Admin.

I hope everyone who has picked names off the lists and or then sold names picked off the lists has donated generously!

I reckon the chances of a sale being remembered as a name from an acorndomains list is pretty slim, especially as it's likely to be many months later.

Some of the names have value and will sell eventually, but there is no easy way to ensure a payment (donation) from people who register and benefit from such sales.

I think the forum is useful in several respects, and would be even better with input from regular visitors who only read the content.

I doubt that any comments on this subject will prompt further contributions, however is does remind me that we might be overdue to make another donation.

My personal view is the best form of donation is a direct contribution to the forum rather than a financial one. It is set up as a community rather than a business, right?

If you have any dropped names which you have on your reject list but may be some use to other people then put them up on the forum. What can it hurt? There are only about 3 or 4 people posting any names out of a membership of 400+ which is a little unbalanced

Admin obviously has an exceptionally long list of names in his/her "watching list" judging by the quality and volume of names posted and the continued postings of names does greatly contribute towards a "good" forum. The contribution is appreciated.

My own personal views only but I guess that it is interesting to see the differences in people's attitudes to forums such as this. Without putting any pressure on to comment it would be interesting to hear what admin's comments were on this and if my views/expectations wrt to the forum are aligned with their's.

I can't speak for anyone else, but to suggest that there is no extra work in posting unwanted domain lists is quite wrong.

If I check a list of say 1000 names that are dropping today and there are 5 I am interested in then yes it would be easy to post the remaining 995, but to post say the best 50 takes much work that is quite often not even acknowledged by the people who register these domains

I'd second that - i appreciate what you say about contributing a list but as you rightly point out there are other members (395+) that dont and register domains from the lists - so if you aint got a list or cant be bothered, £5 donation or something is a small price for the efforts of others and to keep this forum going strong.

Yes we have tried to keep an open policy and a few key forum members make a donation EVERY time they take a name as you suggest. They know who they are and we are grateful to them for their recognition of the lists we provide.

Some have promised donations after sales have been made but we have only had this happen once in over a year.

We have also tried to limit bombarding you with adverts.

For anyone who thinks this is no work, please vet and post your availables list every day and see how long it takes.

There are forum members taking lots of names (up to 5 a day in some cases) with no recognition to AD at all. This is discouraging to us for the time and effort taken to provide them. As you say a TAG or DC slot would cost a whole lot more.

We put the forum together to help domainers from hobbyist up to serious professionals and we hope it helps the smaller players pick up some reasonable names they would otherwise miss out on. That said we don't expect to work for nothing either especially as the forum has increasing maintenance costs.

It is probably time for us to rethink our lists but at the same time we do not want to discourage use or benefit of the forum.
