I haven't been catching or registering domains for a few years now, but wondered if drop catching has evolved at all? is it still the same process with domains dropping and the registration process? same amount of polling etc?

You don't poll or use the DAC. Nominet give a list of the second when a domain will drop. You send your EPP creates for that time.

Yes, it has changed quite a bit. It is less about constantly checking availability and more about timing accuracy, EPP implementation, queue handling, and deciding which names are actually worth chasing.

In that sense, dropcatching is still competitive, but the mechanics are different from the older “watch and poll” days.

Nominet publish lists but I have a free site with relevant info at https://ukdroplists.com

From what I see, the main shift is that the advantage is no longer in “finding” the drop but in execution quality.

Nominet now provides the exact drop second, so everyone is targeting the same moment. That makes timing accuracy, EPP performance, and connection stability far more important than the old polling approach.

Also, there are several public sources for the .uk droplist, including Nominet’s own list and some third‑party aggregators like DropArena, which can be useful if you want a quick, centralized view of the current expiring names.

So overall, less guesswork — more engineering and smarter selection.
