Hi Guys,
got a question on .uk domains.
If for example i have a .co.uk domain and it expires say on 1st December (to make it easy) '07. If i don't renew it before that date, how long do i have before i lose it?

Reason i ask is, i have always renewed domains well in time or sold before.
Also with .coms etc it seems different with different registars, for example Godaddy steal it off you the second it expires and charge you a kings ransom to get back, whereas Domainsite are very laid back and auto renew and give you weeks to get round to it if you want.

Does it vary with UK registars? or is it laid down in stone with Nominet?
Always wondered about this and seem to remember reading about a 42 day buffer zone, or i may be wrong for .uk domains

Thanks in advance

Roughly, It goes to renewal required for 30 days, if not renewed it goes to suspended for 60 days - there's also an extra 7 days to be added in there somewhere but cant remember where :)

Basically they drop 92 or 99 days after the renewal date.

At which point they are removed from your registar account depends on the registrar you use, if you cant access it that way you can still renew it direct with Nominet (for an extortianate amount) right up to the drop day.

Thanks Grant.
So in a nutshell (an acorn ;)), after their renewal date (lets say 1st Dec.) you have 30 days to renew?... so until end December.? .... you can just pay your normal registrar fee?
After which time you have to pay Nominet big bucks if going over an additional 30 days?
cheers

You edited during my reply :).....

After the renewal date you have 92 or 99 days, you can renew at any time between renewal date and the day it drops but that depends on whether the registrar removes domains from your account once they are suspended.

Some skanky registrars will try and charge you extra to renew when its suspended but it is the same renewal process/cost to them.

In theory, If its suspended and you cant get at it you can go direct to Nominet and manually change the TAG to another registar then renew it there for a fiver or whatever.
