What are you guys using to help find your keywords?

Are the paid for tools useful and if which one should I consider purchasing first?

An example would be, how can I find keywords for a sight I want to build on leather walking boots.

From the top of my head I would create pages for,

Mens leather walking boots
Womens leather walking boots, and
Childrens leather walking boots.

Perhaps an article on cleaning leather walking boots too.

Now I'm about to head over to googles keyword tool and see if that gives me some more ideas.

What are your thoughts on the keyword tools, e.g.

http://www.marketsamurai.com/

Was just about to mention market samurai. I used it in the past, it's really handy for checking competition too.

However, a few weeks ago it wasn't working and I'm not sure if they've fixed it yet.

You should try out the free trial if you aren't sure :)

traffic travis and seo powersuite.

those niche finders etc are not any good.

Jamie is correct, MS has not been working too god for at least a week

I get 12 days free trial with MS - I'll give it a shot and see if I think it's buying the full suite.

Message in MS says the service has been restored following the interruption

I'll take a look at the others mentioned too.

Any more?

I use ubersuggest.org for some keywords (which I feed into GAKT) which I probably wouldn't have thought of which is free.

I've also heard some good things about a program called LongTailPro which might be worth looking into.

Hope this helps!

Do some test searches around the subject, see what the top 10-20 sites returned for each search have in their
A) Title
B) Description
C) On their front page (intro paragraphs, and also main navigation elements)

That should give you plenty of ammunition for further searches around the topic!

Thanks Edwin, I've seen this mentioned before and it's good.

Another way is to see if you can find a book on the subject in Amazon, and hopefully use the 'look inside' feature to see key phrases in the books content pages.

I purchased longtail pro after hearing and reading some pretty good things about it.

..snip...

I have managed to source a couple of decent domains using this tool alongside various other keyword research methods.

Regards,
Chris

This looks pretty good - I'll check a few reviews on long tail pro and try out the demo of market samurai.

I'm trying a month with secockpit. It's pretty expensive but has gave me a few ideas for articles and more importantly what keywords to avoid due to strong competition.
