Sorry to derail the thread slightly but can someone tell me what spammers hope to gain by posting 'Thanks for sharing' or the equivalent across any threads regardless of if it makes sense? Usually they necro old threads to do it - I mean this thread is only a month old but I've seen it on a lot older. They always seem to come from certain countries as well. Maybe 'Chris Albert' (a good traditional UAE name) can enlighten me? I'm genuinely interested because I get lots of these daily at another forum and think what a waste of my time they are moderating.

*edit Is it because they want to set their profile page homepage to links to 3rd rate web design/seo companies? If so seems like a lot of work.

Post on forums, let the dust settle, come back later on after a while and add signature links in?

Pretty much, and most realise they have to have x amount of posts before they can post a link in a post or add a signature so gradiaully add short spammy posts until those numbers are hit. Although with xenforo links in posts and signatures are nofollow anyway, On most forums now days profiles are hidden completely from search, although seems acorn still allows it ( but profile links still nofollow by default ).

Not that nofollow means nofollow anymore
