Just wondered if anyone has any knowledge of free sim cards?

A few networks are giving away free sim cards, and I wondered if it's possible to plug them straight into a handset and start receiving texts/calls?

Do you have to activate them first or put any money on the to be able to receive incoming?

Previously, I've just bought cheapo handsets from carphonewarehouse that come with £10 top-up.

Just wondered what the deal is with the free sims

Thanks!

I've had the same mobile number for around 7 years now, and I'm in Ireland so it may be a bit different but from what I remember you can start receiving calls/texts straight away without needing to top up first etc.

I suppose it could depend on the network though but I'm nearly sure you don't need to top up to receive calls or texts. However, usually if you don't top up for a certain period of time the sim will stop working.

The GiffGaff sim needs to be registered on-line, but this is a simple process and if you order one through an affiliate link (such as mine!) you get an extra credit over and above your initial topup.

You're going to need to do something to get the sim registered whether it is pre-purchase or post-purchase
