Microsoft is giving away free developer software:

Announcing the release of Visual Studio 2005 Express Editions

I am proud to announce that today, November 7th 2005, we officially
released the downloadable versions of Visual Studio 2005 Express on
MSDN and they are free to download for one year!

Download Visual Studio Express
You can download Visual Studio Express from the links below:
Visual Web Developer 2005 Express
Visual Basic 2005 Express
Visual C# 2005 Express
Visual C++ 2005 Express
Visual J# 2005 Express
SQL Server Express

Visual Studio Express is free for one year
Until November 7, 2006, we are promotionally discounting the
downloadable versions of Express to free. This doesn’t mean that the
product turns off after a year, but rather that as long as you
download the product before November 7, 2006, you can get it for free
and you can use it forever.

Thanks for that - tempted now to unleash my hitherto deeply hidden programming skills on the world.

Last time I did any proper programming was at University in Cobol and Fortran on a PDP minicomputer, although was quite proficient in BBC Basic at one point. Really showing my age now!!

STephen.

Downloaded and installed on an old laptop... now a full IIS/ASP development server.

suppose I'll have to succumb to the delights of ASP.

hmmm

oh, and brassneck... yep, and I remember them well. Never had as much fun as got/gosub on a BBC acorn. :)

Those are nothing compared to OSWORD &14 and the fun that could be had on your school's Econet! Did anyone else play with that? It was great for impressing girls!

I bet you have a beard, jesus sandals, a saggy cardigan with patched arms, and sit up all night watching OpenUniversity!

Who learnt what gate 7 was in the z80 CPU

I vaguely remember leaning how to set flags in a Z80 CPU with assembler and being really impressed about 2's compliment multiplication.

What I can't figure out is why I then went and did an engineering degree and missed the whole boat by a decade or so

Glad I'm not the only older person around here. Likewise, wondering why I pursued a career in statistics rather than staying with computing.

Is it because computing is pretty boring compared to - oh, wait...
