General affiliate commission sharing rules

Hi guys,

Generally, are there any restrictions laid down by affiliate schemes whereby you can't share your affiliate commission on a sale with a buyer who clicks on your link?

If you mean like an incentive site, yes, there are often different (lower)commission rates and terms, and many merchants won't accept incentive sites.

Many thanks Bruce. No, I don't mean from any incentive site, just the basic premise of e.g. yourself or your family and friends; or even colleagues using a link of yours and getting half of the affiliate commission. Maybe this is a simple and silly question but I know very little about affiliate marketing.

If it is a private arrangement between family and friends, it is unlikely anyone would have a problem, although probably strictly speaking against some of their rules.

Remember you are not allowed to use your own Amazon links.

I have spoke to affiliates about this in the past and recently and gotten a mixed reaction, but in general they are ok with it, long as your not taking the mick.

I am about to buy a second Canon 5D mk2 camera body (literally soon as I can see straight), and I spoke to 3 affiliates lets called them W, P and J. The conversation pretty much said: I'm looking to buy and IF i buy off my own link and count the affiliate com as a discount your cheaper, otherwise Y and/or Z are cheaper, so can I use my affiliate links to buy my own and family camera stuff.

One said no problems, one said no, and the last said as long as I'm not using this on my sites to gain sales its ok.

I think if you pretty much just say, with my aff comm as a discount your cheaper than X, Y, so is it ok to do it ? I'm pretty sure any right minded person would see that a little less money than full amount it better than no money

Thanks Steve, so I guess that the only probable issue is if you start trying to buy using your OWN link, but passing your link to others and giving them a kick-back is not against any affiliate scheme rules. Bear with me with this as I ask these stupid questions

I would assume its the same situation really. I would word it more as friends and family buying through your links, so they can get it cheaper. Not ness spelling out the details

1 company has started to issue 'affiliate discount codes' which are for affiliates, friends and family to use (instead of an affiliate comission), so maybe this is the way forward too.

If it's a private arrangement can't see the problem, however if the link doesn't track then it's going to be more tricky to submit an enquiry. In general I use quidco for most of my purchases as it's easier for me to manage and I suspect they get higher commission rates than me for many of the merchants anyway.
