Geo mini sites

I have a bunch (50+) geo websites and am just wondering if anyone else has?

Are they doing well and what kind of revenue you looking at?

I have only just set them up this year and am getting revenue of about few $ a day and growing as sites get indexed and ranked better.

Here's one of them as an example, I am going to fill the sites with businesses get the site ranked well and sell ad space too. (already added businesses to help with SEO.)

This is how I cleared half of my student debt - building mini sites and selling them.

There is profit there but I believe the future for them is slim unless these sites hold useful information.

The reason is, Google is getting smarter, so are internet users and new search engine features such as the ability to remove certain sites from your search means crappy mini sites may be quickly chucked off the radar.

It can be easy to go for the short term gains of having 50 mini sites and it is better spreading your risks but I would certainly look at either developing them into larger information sites or selling off quite a few and concentrating on 5-10.

I do think I will start adding content and pages that are more relevant to the domain, again it's just time.

I will add that task to the spread sheet i created to manage them.

I have a few geos - sold one or two - tried a mini site - poor return. Now going down the avenue of leasing web diversions to interested parties. Only 2 takers so far - rate £36.00 p.a. Gives a steady return and you still have the domain. Thinking of reducing the rental to £26.00 p.a. Anybody else had success with renting diversions? Requires a bit of effort in making contact with likely interested parties.
As an example I leased Edinburghmortgage dot co dot uk and the firm is quite happy with the way things are going.
Any others doing anything similar? Maybe not - not the way to get rich quick but at least you hold onto your assets.

I think khalid is on the money, but it's great what you're doing to have them getting indexed now. Just having them out there will help returns later. If you keep adding content.

I've a bunch of London area/station names that I've been wanting to develop into minisites maybe with a blog, forum and business directory.

When I get time I think I just need to throw them all up even with the same template just to get them in google, then build on it from there.

Am keen to hear what others think about GDG's idea and example of Hull Doors. Geo-Generic

All my Hull sites have the same template that i have tweaked to make it easier to add businesses, content and logo's etc.

It has taken a while but i have nearly 60+ sites set up and indexed. Just need to add companies and content on a regular basis now.

Come on people anyone got anything to report? or will i have to in 4 months

Interesting approach, GoldDigger. Hope it goes well.

I'm curious: why did you go for this approach rather than the standard 'big site with many sections' approach?

A site that has many sections or is a huge directory, say I did HullDirectory.co.uk instead it won't seem as shiny to Google for one sector such as Doors in Hull or to possible advertisers in that industry.

A site that just shows Skip Hire in Hull will be seen as a better option to clients to either advertise on it or buy it out right!

If I sold doors in Hull I would rather be on HullDoors.co.uk than freeindex.co.uk in the yorkshire/hull/doors section. (just my way of thinking)

I thought also to try many sectors and spread my net afar to see what results I get. I'm confident that I will make my money back for at least my hosting and domain reg. Once they perform well on key phrases i will approach companies to advertise on them for a small annual fee of £??

All good points. For what it's worth, I agree that potential customers for goods and services of the type your sites cover are getting more sophisticated with their searches, and geographical searches are a big part of that. And of course with this approach, you should get more targetted entries in Google's listings as opposed to a glut of general ones.

Would be good if you could keep us up to date on how this goes for you: I for one would be interested to see how you progress. Good luck.

Just an update Guys.

Sites are averaging out at $34 in total for all 60 sites for this month up to now.

Not great at all i know! but it is growing and i'm getting some high earners now and again.

I'm looking at importing companies details through WordPress rather than posting one going to the next domain, going through my list and starting again. ( if anyone has a big spread sheet on Hull businesses ta very much pretty please )

I also will be adding info pages for the sector of the domain e.g. Door info, how to hang a door etc

All sites come out well for the domain search e.g. "Hull Doors" and other long tail phrases people might type "hull door companies" "hull door suppliers" "security door companies in hull" "door companies in hull" "exterior door suppliers in hull" "upvc Door companies in hull" etc

So I think Adsense will be a nice earner to pay for the reg fees of them all and the hosting plus much much more..... fingers crossed.

I'll see how they perform and make a list of phrases for each domain that it appears on page 1 and 2 for and then contact the companies listed on them and any I've missed off and offer advertising space/listing.

What would be a fair annual price for a door company to pay if the site appeared page 1 and i know it isn't always going to be THAT company but it's a push in the right direction to them. £25 ? £50? £200? per year

One last thing what about an out right sale if a company asks and the mini site is performing OK.
