Over the last 3-6 months I have noticed some strange things happening with google. One thing I just can't understand though is how a site of mine can be number 4 in the world for a search term and number 17 when you click on pages from the UK

The site is a .co.uk site and it is hosted in the UK

Has anybody else seen this and can anyone explain why this is happening?

Not seen anything like that. Possibly caused by google switching datacenter when UK option is selected.

But if you've been getting those results awhile that probably rules out that possibility as the datacenters would align at somepoint to display the same results.

Can you give us the URL and search term?

have a look at your inbound links... where are they coming from? US sites, UK sites? US based links could influence the serps...

Thanks Stevie. I've thought of that, not looked into it yet, but it only happens on certain keywords. Most of my links are from UK sites but I guess I could have some anchor text for this specific keyword phrase on more US sites than UK ones.
