I saw the article, but it will never happen "meaningfully". The internet is made up of countless networks of all speeds and varieties - all that will happen in practice is Web traffic may move over the Grid rather than over some other fiber optic cable somewhere.

It's like saying "aha, in the future the water in your taps may come from large plastic pipes, not small metal pipes!". You don't care since it's still the same water (perhaps more of it in a given time, if you want it) and what's important is the water - nobody other than the plumber cares what kind of pipe it's in. The Grid's just a fancy way of saying "a nicer pipe".
