Personally I think it will take a long time for the .uk to really be considered the new .co.uk by the end consumer, which is the most important thing.
You can set the geography of a domain in G Webmaster Tools I believe, so I'd say no. .co.uk vs .uk shouldn't be any different (although i'm sure they will be slightly)
But if you have a site running, then it's a big switch, new site so a long time to get it ranking, the same as setting up a brand new .co.uk would be.
