At the moment, .in is very hot in all over the world, especially in European countries like Germany and Swiss. I'm seeing a lot of developed German websites under .in cctld.

Companies regularly use .co.in although .in is available.

Internet market is rapidly growing in India. As per the 2007 estimates, there are more than 45 Million active internet users in India, and it is growing exponentially due to the recent growth in IT.

Although IDN names are in use, English names are very popular in India.

.co.in is older than .in.

Are most of the good English .co.in and .in names already taken?

Yes, most of the generic one word .in names, NNN.in, LLL.in are already gone!

The internet usage in India is considerably increasing every year, currently there are lot of online markets targeting Indian customers.
