Is it standard practice for hosting companies to only let you host 1 website, unless you pay for more?

Yes. You usually have to have a re-sellers account for multiple hosting.
I know someone like fasthosts charge about £50 per month.

But what if you decide you want to develop a different website can you swap the name that is hosted? if you get what i mean.

you can normally set up a sub folder or domain - if you want some flexible temp or perm space to host a website on or just to use for email account - pm me (cheap!! ) asp and php

Yes you can change the domain you use. I have a site hosted with fasthosts which is about £50 for the year and have swapped domain names a few times. You have to pay extra foe mysql etc. Not cheap but they are good. I will be wanting to host multiple small sites for some affiliate sites tho so will be looking for something cheaper. Problem is there's loads of re-sellers out there and you can come unstuck. But a few people on here offer cheap hosting.

Hostroute UK and US are pretty good, they have 5, 10, 30 50 and 100 accounts I think.

...Some may let you think this is the case, but as charlie has said "you can normally set up a sub folder". In practice, you 'normally' can set up hundreds!

...1&1 MS Hosting allows from 50 to 500 'top level' domains to be hosted from one package, costing from £5.63 per month to £21.61 per month. Not bad I'd say.

I am currently doing a 3 month free trail with streamline.net , they seem very reasonable with 500mb ,2 mysql data bases e.t.c for £31.99 per year, this seems cheap yes? Anyone got any experiences with streamline.net

IF you looking for that much diskspace and bandwidth then make sure you look at www.findmyhost.com & espeically www.webhostingtalk.com - DreamHost have been known to be very slow and oversell.

Never used them myself, but on the one hand people get kicked off for hogging resources (always an issue on shared hosting) and then people complain its slow. Cant have cake and eat it.

Their support is less than useless.

I use 1and1 for my domains, so are we saying that their hosting if you are looking for lots of very small one or two page sites is ideal?

Does this mean that I can have as many pages as I want as long as I don't use up all the disk space!

Also If I design a page in dreamwaver how easy is it to actually put the page up...forgive my ignorance.

If you are forwarding the domains to the webspace, then yes. You just forward to

www.domain.com/page1.html
