Just curious,

If I was running a business and used a proper agency, how much would they usually charge for design and coding a standard website?

e.g. Agency in Sheffield and agency in London prices.

Cheers.

My friend Jim runs an agency (he's originally from yorkshire but based off shore now, his prices didn't change), and for a standard website, nothing fancy he charges £600-1000, including domain, hosting etc.

I think that's a very broad question.

Is it eCommerce? 3 page with custom imagery? 20 page corporate?

I think it depends on what you mean by "standard". I've worked with a few agencies that have developed small sites for around £2k. For that you get a dedicated account manager, a designer and coder and the site built within a week, following a process of design, review, amend, review etc. Here in London a top end PHP developer can be on £250-£400 per day, .net developer on more, designer on £300 etc so £2k is arguably fairly reasonable. Some agencies also lease their developers for around £1k per day.

If you were a one person operation building a WP site you could probably build the same site in a day.

The difference is that the agency usually has a pool of people with specific skill sets and experts are expensive.

Exactly, like saying how much does a standard house cost?

I charge from £249 for a hand built (not wordpress) , coded from scratch 3 page website with domain name and hosting.

More pages, more features = more expensive.

Bit of a 'Piece of String' question....I suppose the extremes would be £100 - £10,000

Oh an agency in London who built an adult site for one of my ex-clients charged £6500+vat for a 10-15 page graphic heavy site with a bespoke CMS for handling video/photo upload (flash based), blog and forum etc.

They then charged £125+Vat for each 3 page "tour" we had them make, which was 2-4 a month.

The client then took this to the US and had it all remade 8 months later of almost equal quality for $3500, some people are mad.

As I recall rackspace wanted £12k for the dedicated server because of the ffmpeg which was needed, but evo destroyed and halved for a better spec, I added this coz it may show the site had some complexity for video transcoding, which may explain the £tag.
