How to approach a "monster"?

I'm curious to see how people view a "monster" domain drop (i.e. a super-valuable name, the kind of drop that comes along only once every few months...)

Would you:
A) Throw everything and the kitchen sink at trying to get the one name, and keep fingers and toes tightly crossed
B) Like A) but try just for a fraction of a day, to get a higher chance IF the name drops during those few hours (and zero chance otherwise). More of a lottery, better percentages if you happened to pick the right time slots.
C) Not bother, but use the "distraction" to try and mop up other drops that are likely to be less than usually contested because everyone's focused on the "monster"
D) Something else entirely

I always thought about doing it this way, if its possible.

Set my high-speed dac quota to poll at double rate for 12 hours a day, then use the delay quota to poll its full amount over the full 24 hours. So for 12 hours in that day your effectively hitting triple speed.

This would be my plan of attack assuming you can do it.

That wouldn't be effective for most people as the delay quota is worked out by the number of domains/registrations on the TAG. To match the real time dac quota for example you'd need 86400 domains on your tag or have registered 2160 domains in one month in the previous 12 months, or a different combination of those figures.

I'm guessing your referring to commercialproperty.co.uk

I noticed this approx 9 weeks back as I have the .org.uk and I spent a good while tracking down contact details and managed to fire off an email to the previous registrant which didn't bounce. I got no reply. I then tried again a week later and done even more digging but got nowhere obviously.

So my answer is d - Tried something else and I guarantee that at least 10 others from here will have also tried to contact before it dropped.

Nice payday for whoever gets this name today, that's for sure and I have my money on one of 1-2 people nabbing this one

Yes, that prompted the thought, but there have been other instances in the past e.g. the kitchenappliances.co.uk day (no CP.co.uk but it's still huge).

Speaking generally (rather than specifically on today's drop) my answer would be B,C orD depending upon the name itself and whatever else was available.

B - where there was nothing much else of interest, slight interest ones where no big deal whether get or not and may have little competition, might go on the delayed DAC

C - where there are others of great interest.

D - A combination of both where the "other" names justify it. Add all interested names including the "monster" to real time DAC plus the others of interest, but weight the polling of the "monster" to a greater % of the time (maybe 80% -90%)

Edwin, FYI, I generally only ever go for one name at a time, and I vary my polling technique just to try and get lucky! At the moment I'm running 15 dac queries for one second, sleeping for two, for the whole day (think that's right). You'd think that I'd be in with a shot of one in three drops, but the luck's not coming my way, the last 6 drops I've targeted have come during my two second lapse!
