Please excuse the dumb question - but I'm not a domainer and Google doesn't seem to be turning up the right answer.

A client needs to transfer a domain (.com) out of a company some of whose assets (including the domain) will soon be transferred into a newco. I've sorted out the legals - but now they don't seem to be able to find out how to transfer a .com - which I believe is an online process. I know how to do .uks - but have never transferred a .com. Does it need to be done through the ISP/registrar?

Any help gratefully accepted!

0. Ensure that the domain's admin contact email is being monitored, because in any case action on an email sent to that address is used to confirm authority to transfer.

If the current and destination registrars are the same - just contact the registrar and request the change. If they are different:

1. Ask the current registrar to unlock the domain for transfer.

2. Ask your current registrar to make a transfer request for the domain.

3. The admin contact of the domain will recieve and email asking if they consent to the transfer.

If the current and destination registrars are the same you should just be able to push the domain from one to the other. If they are not the same you could set up an account for the company recieving the domain with the registrar where the domain is held now and then do the push. Most big registrars let you push .coms from your control panel

Change to .com transfers

From 26 August .com and .net domain names will require the issue of an authorisation code by the current ISP to effect a registrar transfer.
