htaccess guru needed

any htaccess gurus know how to sold the following.

in google i have about 20k of old urls for example

/garden/category/gardenhose/?pt=1&productblahblahblah

so what i want to do is have htaccee look at the first category which in this case /garden/ and forward it to just /garden/

so if i have:

/toys/category/mickeymouse/?pt=1&productblahblahblah

htaccess forwards it to /toys/

is this possible?

what im trying to do is anything in google that says

/garden/category/gardenhose/?pt=1&productblahblahblah

diverts to

/garden/

no luck as of yet
