Earlier this week, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) – the global organisation responsible for the Internet’s naming system - approved changes to the domain name system that will allow organisations and communities to apply for new domain name endings.

At present there are 22 generic top-level domains (gTLDs), such as .com, .org and .net. Under the new rules, organisations will be able to apply for any top level domain they might want, in any language or script.

Personal: Domain names

Business: Brand protection, Business website, Domain names

Years away from happening…..Look at all the other AERO, .TRAVEL, .COOP, .MUSEUM …TEL etc TLD’s they have been a great success. . (Don’t forget ICANN previously marked those represented the largest need and demand in the market.) Multiple parties going after the same ones tesco’s Wal-Mart etc going after .food .shopping etc defiantly be no legal challenges there….

Think of all the abbreviated company initials etc that would be similar or exactly the same as existing cctld’s or even domain names… (Thought there idea was also of not to introduce confusingly similar ones….) Add the configuration and customization of various software, convincing the public to use them a marketing strategy “if you don’t buy it now we may not offer it again that’s not desperate….”
Recipe a for disaster and doomed to fail only ones who would make ££££ out of it was ICANT..? “ oh no there doing it for cost “
