I was wondering if you lot on here could help.

I had some domain names that expired on 20th april 2007...they were registered by someone on the 7th May 2007?

Is this possible..?? isn't there a 90 day period where i am allowed to register the domains. (It was 1 .com and 4 .net domains)

The length of time depends on the registrar you used. The basic process is:

Phase 1. Active Domain

Phase 2. On-Hold
If the domain is not renewed it is placed in an onhold (on-hold) status for 1-45 days (each registrar has determines how long this period lasts)

Phase 3. Redemption
The domain then enters redemption status (RGP - Redemption grace period), which lasts for 30 days. During this time the registrant of the domain name has the option to pay a redemption penalty fee (redemption fees generally cost between $100-200 depending on the registrar) and renew the domain.

Phase 4. Pending Delete
After the domain completes the 30 day redemption period without being renewed, it then enters a 5 day pending delete period. During this the time the registrant no longer has the ability to renew the domain name. The domain will be released to the general public and be available for registration on the sixth day at 2pm eastern.

So from the date of renewal, it may be anything between 36 to 80 days.

So these are illegal registrations then given the time frame? Does anyone know what the period is for GoDaddy ??

If you fail to renew your domain name, you agree that Go Daddy may, at its sole discretion, renew your expired domain name on your behalf. If Go Daddy decides to renew your expired domain name on your behalf you will have a Renewal Grace Period during which you may reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal and keep your domain name. The Renewal Grace Period is currently 12 days but subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this Agreement. If you do not reimburse Go Daddy for the renewal during the Renewal Grace Period your domain name will be placed on Hold and flagged for deletion after which you will have a 30 day redemption period during which you may pay Go Daddy a Redemption fee and redeem your domain name. The Redemption fee is currently $80 USD and is subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this agreement. If you do not redeem your domain name prior to the end of the 30 day redemption period Go Daddy may, at its sole discretion, delete your domain name or transfer it to another registrant on your behalf.

If your domain is deleted, the Registry also provides a 30 day Redemption Grace Period during which you may pay Go Daddy a redemption fee and redeem your domain name. The redemption fee is currently $80 USD and is subject to change under the terms of Section 2 of this agreement. If you do not redeem your domain name prior to the end of the Registry’s Redemption Grace Period the Registry will release your name and it will become available for registration on a first-come-first-served basis.

what difference?

On the whois, are they 'new' registrations or have they been transfered? If they are new registrations, are you 100% that the renewal dates you have are correct?

yeah they are correct as they were ordered in bulk .. i'm 99.99% sure..

is there a way of checking when a domain was originally registered etc... is there a website resource with this information...history of a domain name etc..

not really sure how to check if it's a new reg on whois. It just displays the dates and owner

The whois lookup should tell you when the domain record was created - i.e. registered.

http://www.domaintools.com/ has a 'domain history' search which may have info for your domains.
