[paulleahy]

This is a question I have thought about asking you my friends for a while Should I buy an iphone4 on vodafone or wait for the iphone5 or forget them both and buy an android phone I have been looking for a 12 month contract but since I dont want to lose my number maybe 18/24 month contract your comments are welcome

Android all the way!!!!!

I'd say at the moment, the main iPhone competitors are the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the various HTC smartphones.

Out of interest, what phone do you have at the moment? If it's not that great, then why wait a long time to upgrade to a nice smartphone. Here are some other options.

I had terrible reception issues with the iPhone4 - if you are in a poor 3G reception area then I'd go for something else. I got my iPhone4 swapped for a Samsung Galaxy S II and have to say that I think both are great but if you use iTunes the iPhone is better (I have doubletwist for android, it's not the same though - genius is very handy if you have a large music collection).

As for everything else, android is very good - better in some things.

I'd be on the lookout for a decent deal on a high spec payg android phone if value is important. I'm pretty sure you can move your phone number to most networks - but it's a while since i did that on a payg to payg (Orange to T mobile) - check if you still can as there are good deals out there - check out hotukdeals and their mobile version.

I have had a few iPhones now and I think they are amazing, can't see myself changing for a while

If you are going to get an iPhone, I would wait for the iPhone 5, as it can't be far off ... but personally I would wait until after the initial launch so you know there aren't any major tech issues like the reception issue last time.

You should only have to wait a week more to get some news.

Behaviour at advertising agencies and US stores head offices makes it seem pretty imminent, end of October early November??

When will it hit the UK though? December? usually a couple of months behind the US.

I've got an iPhone 3, love using it, will def upgrade to latest iPhone on Orange when next avail. Also have a HTC Mozart, great phone too.

iPhone all the way

I've just switched from and iphone 4 to a HTC Sensation...

Features are awesome - much less locked down than an iphone - wifi tethering is free - not £10 per month for example.

But the battery life is woeful - I only get 3/4 of a day and I only really use it for calls and emails - I've even bought an upgraded 2350mAh battery - still sh1t.

The android devices are much more aligned with my techyness but they aren't as slick - they crash more, I sometimes find GPS on and 10% battery when I've not used maps or any other app that would turn it on.

When the iphone 5 is out - I'll buy one sim free and pump this one on ebay I think.

Apple do have it easier than google - only having to develop for small number of different hardware platforms they create, you can see why they do this as everything works and is very slick.

It's a shame as I have middle child syndrome - I always want something different from everyone else, but as an all round smartphone - nothing can touch the iphone IMO.

If you do have to plump for Android - make sure you read lots of reviews and if you see anything regarding battery life being rubbish, steer clear...

Most of the Android phones I've tried all have an area where they're strong but for a complete package the iPhone is unbeatable at the moment. I would get an iPhone 4 as they're awesome, by time you get another upgrade the 5 will have come down in price. My mate got his when they first came out and had to pay full whack, I got mine a month or two after and got it for free.

You'll also struggle to get a short (12 month) contract on an iPhone unless you're willing to pay a lot per month or settle for a crap package...

I would personally go for the iPhone, but now wouldn't be the best time to buy one. Wait and see what happens when the iPhone 5 comes out, as it will give you a few options:

1. See what the difference in price is for contract/PAYG deals on the different versions, as it may be minimal. From memory, when the iPhone 4 came out they reduced the price of the 3GS (by a little) but at the same time also reduced the storage capacity making the difference not actually that big.

2. Buy a new or nearly new iPhone 4 from someone that's just upgraded but is desperate for the 5.

3. Buy a new or nearly new iPhone 5 from someone that's just upgraded but is happy to keep their 4.

Tesco Mobile do 12 month contract packages on the iPhone although the handsets won't be free. If you can afford to, you will generally be better off purchasing a handset on PAYG and using a sim-only contract.

For anyone who hasn't already heard of them, GiffGaff.com runs off the O2 network and has some pretty cheap PAYG bundle packages. For example, £10/month (with no contract) gets you 250 anytime minutes and 'truly unlimited' data/texts.

If you take out an o2 phone now (even a pay as you go, last I asked) you can upgrade to contract on a 12 month deal as existing customer and take your pay as your go credit with you.

O2 only allow truly unlimited phone data, by Phone I mean used only by the phone NOT by tethering or pc use, so don't get sucked into the unlimited being truly unlimited , streaming radio will get ya slapped

They do give you free wifi via BT BrokenZone so you can connect via lots of phone boxes and such, so its not too bad.

UK release date for Iphone 5

http://www.knowyourmobile.com/blog/1051811/exclusive_iphone_5_uk_release_date_leaked_by_o2.html

I like the iphone and the way it works, BUT I had a play with a Samsung Galaxy S II and it just did it for me.

A few things I felt that did it

• Thinner,
• bigger screen,
• faster,
• cheaper contract,
• more customisable,
• just looked better TBH

So in a few weeks when I'm due it will be one of them all the way!

Also pictures don't give a true reflection of it at all!

[chippyb]

I have the Galaxy S2 and it is amazing, Android is such a better thing the Apple, most apps on android are free and you can do lots more on it than iphone, you have to jailbreak the iphone to make it a phone like the rest, has no one noticed that apple advertise and make a big fuss about things that phones have already done for years! plus they are a rip off, £200 with a contact! i think not!
the iphone isnt special so dont be a sheep and get one! lol
