Been reading up on how some folks got started in Forum running...

Many admit to having signed themselves up as multiple members in the early days... One guy was admin and five others... He's now got tens of thousands of members and over 500k posts...

What have you had to do (that your willing to admit) to get things rolling...

Aside from giving away stuff, what other things can you do...

Input appreciated...

PR. You need a gimmick or create a hype and then get it written about in the papers or on high traffic websites. I've done it recently and got lots of hits but unfortunately not signups to the forum.

you need to be honest, I loved it when a bit of direction would come from somewhere and they'd advise signing up under multiple usernames, even a year later people thought "it's Lee Owen using different names" when in reality in South London we're all bstards haha so 16 million pages impressions a year later and I aint half busy being hundreds of different people.

It's an idea but do good content and they will come.

That was quite a stunt you pulled... Thanks for the feedback...
Interesting that you mention traffic/sign ups...
High traffic websites....

Lee

LOL... Do good content...
Thanks...

Thanks for that.... Know it's been asked before BUT, I'm so tight fisted, I need reassurance on this one:

Is the $165 fee for VBul for the features etc worth shelling out at the outset?

Depends on how big you think the site will become. We started on free space and now we have a dualP4 server to ourselves.

Vbulletins code is such that server load is now <1 for most of the day as opposed to >3 with horrendous spikes with phpBB.

Vbulletin still amazes me with how much can be done and the depth of the mods available. Migration from phpBB to VBulletin for anything other than a vanilla install requires expertise and patience.

It's a commercial product and shows.

Guess I'll have to stump up the cash... Was gonna use phpBB but I think it would just create a bigger cost in the long-run from the sound of things...

Thanks - much appreciated...

Well...

Just got back in but while I was out, couldn't stop thing about making the leap... Last thing anyone wants is money down the pan....

What the heck, just bought a 'Licensed version', the tight wad in me wouldn't let me go the whole hog...

Thing is, is it still the same as the unlicensed version?
V 3.6.0 is what I've got...

We're on 3.5.4 and will have to upgrade soon. The new version is quite a leap apparently and will mean a fair amount of work. Then again the db in now 750Mb+ for a mysql db!

Still, the right decision of you;re planning long term and want scaleability

Only work for me cos we modded the templates a fair amount, have such a large db, and have some of the older plugins. A vanilla install like this board shouldn't be an issue.
