I've been out for a few beers, the first few beers in a long time after the birth of my son.
out in bath and bristol and I'm hearing others are talking about domains. folk in other conversations tall about a dot com or owning a dot Co. uk
Bizarre is it just me or are others just getting it?

everyone has been talking about brand type domains... I guess because the generic is taken..

Firstly Congratulations, birth, beer and domains, sounds like a good night lol

There are thousands and thousands of people in the UK who buy and sell domains, who have never heard of acorn or nominets issues.

And many thousands who have bought domains with a plan to use in the future, probably bought after watching dragons den or the apprentice, been happening for many years.

And 100's of thousands of small business people who have bought them, maybe having noticed that their intended domain was for sale when searching, and having bought their own, maybe registered a few brandables to sell.

This country has a great entrepreneurial population, unfortunately most of them, myself included procrastinate to much, allowing the doers to succeed, as they should.

Waffling on here, but what is one thing all these people who have mainly bought .co.uk domains have in common?

Yes, Nominet don't think they deserve to be informed about things that could change their lives.

From speculative purchases to students buying domains before setting on a course of study, only to find out that 5 years on, their purchases may be second rate.

I believe the tv ads from Godaddy and 1&1 (instant business site) are increasing awareness.

You often see addresses like [email protected] on the back of vans and now these people are attracted to the idea of actually owning a site and proper email address.

Saying that, most of the time I see vans with .com or .co.uk domains and they are still using the @hotmail.com @btinternet.com email addresses, they got the idea about the domains, haven't quite worked out the email yet

Very true arron see that all the time nice new van with logo's then and nice hotmail or gmail email address beside the domain name....

Whenever I get a gardener or plumber or cleaner or whatever in, they always ask 'How did you find out about me?' (always Google), which then leads on to a discussion about SEO. Love it! (And only minor overtones of 'I will pay you to come to my house and talk about SEO with me').

Mind you, it frequently backfires when they see you with a computer because then they insist that you fix their problem, even if it's that they can't burn a disc on their home PC...

I was looking for a local dog sitter/walker a few months ago

One of the few that came up in Google for my area was the horrendously named wag-gy-tails.co.uk

They appear to be out of business now as site is down (no surprises there) - Their site itself had been fairly simple but functional but I just couldn't bring myself to entrust my dog to them, all because of their choice of domain. (In fact if I wasn't desperate at that point I wouldn't have even got as far as clicking on their site)

I recently Sold a co.uk hand regged two word generic drop to a company with millions turnover that are in advertising, marketing industry so you’d think pretty savvy (They had org.uk which would have predated the co.uk they’ve since let drop so would have got the uk ? )

They launched in conjunction with another biggish firm a product from a .co ???? This generic word site shows a brand name ( also generic also free to reg not anymore)

There Designers/Developers not one firm but two? and “SEO Expert!" all missed – com and co.uk and non - singular and plural co.uk all owned by a company that had gone into liquidation all names shown as suspended mths prior too launch? All now regged

Even after buying the co.uk they have not re-branded as it but point to the .co So I’d say some are getting dumber not smarter?

Its not that hard Profits more important than turnover

Some of you lads & lassies need to wake up and realise that domains aren't that important. If they were, all those trillions of £'s worth of domains that we're sat on would be making us rich.

Names are not important ditto being on the web at all..? But if you do decide to have a web presence then the investment should be in what gives the best chance of profit, longevity etc use the right one ?

You can forgive a Company whose not net smart for not knowing what names are free if you think the designers and Seo experts should not spot or put them forward I’d disagree and in this instance the company agreed hence the purchase..

You're not wrong but only one person/company can have the best name but those who aren't so lucky still get by okay. There's an unhealthy obsession with domains on here that unduly influences peoples view of the real world.

It would be interesting to see how often do people buy from a url they've seen on a vehicle or billboard. Personally, I can't remember ever doing so and I've seen a lot. I can also only name you one URL I remember and that's sofas.com which was in HUGE letters on the side of a luton van we sat next to while in a big queue on the M25 near Heathrow.

I agree with a lot of this. The vast majority of people I know visit sites via Google or bookmarks - even for popular sites like Amazon or BBC. I don't understand why they don't type urls in but they don't!

The belief alone, in a quality name can have marked effects on a companies success. A quality name is like a quality office building, a quality company car, or anything else where the prestige motivates. You may not see things like that but many do and to cap that if you can use a term that's already branded through use and familiarity then it can be priceless.
And really, if you can only recall one name you've seen, then that's why you have difficulty in seeing value.
