Hi Guys

Looking at recent sales, it's evident to me that the big money in domains is now only made with .com. Therefore, a simple technique to make more money would be to forget about .co.uk and to focus only on .com. Discuss.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I've discovered that my websites make more money when they're ranked #1 instead of #10. Therefore, a simple technique to make more money would be to make sure they're all #1.

Taking this thread seriously though (can we?), of course .com is the most valuable, it is the most well known, popular global domain extension, however, the cost of entry is so much higher to trade in than .co.uk's, so they may balance out with similar margins etc.

True, but If you're buying into .com now (2015) you'll have to pay big.

Outlets like NJ, SN and DC are not cheap wholesale venues.

Whois knocking maybe your only shot to purchase low.

I am getting a bit fed up of the relatively poor prices/reception for .uk, so I think I'm going to switch over to .com.

Good luck!

There are ten of thousands of .com domainers and finding an edge there won't be easy.

Got to agree with the opening thread!

But ironically i've made more money with dot co

I would say that most domain sales are not advertised at all. I can vouch that .co.uk domain names do sell for a lot of money very often.

If you're starting from scratch in .com, you better have very, very deep pockets.

While your statement about "big money" may be true, your second statement doesn't follow logically on from it because decent .com domains cost much much more than they would in .co.uk so you're going to need 10x-100x+ the startup capital to build a decent position in .com that you would in .co.uk.

It's like saying "the price of high-quality diamonds tends to go much faster than the price of silver" - it's only relevant if you can afford to buy the diamonds in the first place (and can tell the difference between them and worthless cubic zirconia, which from the ample evidence on other domain forums most people can't)

If .uk domains were £100/pa each, how many of your "5,000+ descriptive, generic .co.uk domains" would you keep renewing? or, perhaps more pertinently, how many will you double-up on with the .uk & .co.uk pair when, in a couple of years time, you are forced to choose?

It depends on your model. If you're primary objective is flipping to end users in the £100-£500 range, there is MUCH less competition and LOWER entry in the .CO.UK naming space.

However, if your selling-model (and budget) allows, mixing is a fantastic business model (it's mine and has been for years):

>> buying lower-tier .COM/.NET/.CO.UK domain names for immediate flippin in the £100-£750 range and using a portion of the sales proceeds to finance .COM brand domains (to hold out for the right offer/buyer - these typically sell in the $1,500-$3,500 range).

There is plenty of income to be generated in .CO.UK alone depending on the energy you are willing to invest in sifting out end-usable domains, and the time to contact the key end users for each domain (sending out emails 1 at a time to the best prospective buyers).

ya, interesting points, this then begs the logical next question (which you would hope results positive for uk domain investors future being that UK is a world renowned growth hub of e-startup types :) )

= so if said Business wants the nice {oneword}.com. {emd}.com or {phrase.com} domain and you ain't got your 100k trousers on, then will you plump for the nice 20k {oneword}.co.uk {emd}.co.uk or {phrase.co.uk} and work with that that?

You could argue thats it less capital risk to start with a.uk too.. who knows

I think that depends on which country or countries you want to target.

I guess it also depends what is more important to you, the name itself or the extension. Some may well want .com only and will simply go and find an alternative, cheaper name and some will stick with the name they've come up with and go for the .co.uk if feasible.
