My understanding is the "set increments" are a minimum amount, so you can go in with your best offer straight away. e.g. £10 to £400 in one hit.

You can but with no proxy system you could be throwing money away as the other bidders may only have gone to £50, which pretty much encourages everyone to bid the minimum.

True, but without proxy bidding in place you could pay a lot more than you needed to. I don't mind paying my top price if someone pushes me to it but I'd rather not pay it if I don't need to.

You can place the bid, but the time out will be as if the bid was made at 10am. So people will have until 11am to make a counter bid.
