If the domain is to be held within the uk, even the uk namespace. Vat should be applicable. Surely as nominet are the registry and uk based vat should be paid as the registry will always be in the uk. Making any domain resident in the uk at all times???

Nominet follows the normal rules regarding the supply of services and VAT applicability with the exception of membership fees which ALWAYS have VAT applied irrelevant of where the member is based.

Non-EU members and EU members with valid VAT numbers don't pay VAT on Nominet fees.

This is an outrage. So not only are foreigners allowed to scoop up these domains, but some have the advantage of not having to pay VAT??

Do you work for or in some way own eclipse internet?

What is wrong with foreign ownership, and what is wrong with applying normal VAT rules?!

‘outrage’ was an exaggeration, it’s not really a big deal, but my objection is that money is leaving these shores for no good reason. Occasionally foreigners who buy up British assets do at least make some positive contribution eg. Upgrade machinery or supply new jobs (though the reverse can happen). But foreign domain speculators won’t be adding anything useful (unless perhaps they develop, though none of the mob bidding on these .uk’s appear to be developers).

It seems quite weird that they are handed an advantage thanks to our VAT rules. This is some kind of loophole, as tax rules should work if anything in favour of the host country, not against it.

Spend tax in other countries are applied the same way.

But of course the speculator intends to profit and overall more money is likely to leave than arrived, without any value having been added in the meantime.

This scenario can be applied to any speculative transaction involving cross border(s) activity.

It shouldn't make a difference just because it involves a domain name.

I was an early customer. I have been critical of domain speculation, so anonymity may have been better (I could have tried harder to achieve this). My views could have prejudiced a project nearly attempted.
I bought domains speculatively ages ago but asking prices are relatively low, and I'm involved in the LL auctions but mainly to achieve something useful (though now wish I hadn't bothered given the time taken).

I've no strong objection to foreigners buying property. Mostly they are coming here to work. Though speculative property purchases may be slightly more objectionable. Foreign buying has pushed up prices for first-time buyers, to the benefit of existing owners in less need of the cash.

However, property sellers must observe market prices. A property sells for a similar price to the one next door. But seller of bb.me.uk can ask whatever he likes, knowing that aa.me.uk will be of no use to buyer. Domain sellers have an unreasonably strong hand in my view.

i wanted to build a website at 'propertyprices.com' so that i could vent spleen, but some bloody domain speculator has that with sponsored links all over it.
the bloody irony!

that speculator will sell if you make a fair bid, and may not even bother with a counter-offer.

My gripe is not with the likes of you, it's with sellers who ask $10k for domains they wouldn't pay more than $100 for.

Scooped up one of "your" .me.uk domains during the auctions and didn't pay any VAT on top of that!
