They could have run all the auctions at the same time, maybe with a 10 minute anti sniping clause. This way people would have focused on the names they were genuinely interested in. As nobody could manage 300+ auctions in 10 minutes.

But on the other hand Nominet did hold a consultation period, I and probably most here didn't give our views before the rules were set. So I, we have to take a small part of the blame as well.

Didn't make a lot of difference even though people did raise issues according to the document Consultations - shortdomains :

"If any find their way into the hands of domain speculators, the entire exercise can be considered a failure.” (Not sure I agree with that!)

FCFS (First-come, first-served) – no more than one per person! (or that - the part that says one per person)

Small organisations with equal rights to a domain name are at a serious disadvantage. A lottery is fairer (Yep agree)

We feel it should be decided by luck/chance rather than by who has the biggest budget ... the next best alternative would be an open bid with all parties present for complete transparency.” (Yep agree)

“Keep the Dutch auction, but regulate how many domains an individual can register at any given time period” (Yep agree)

In fact let's look at exactly what Nom then stated at the end of Issue 14: :

Nominet will have to consider this and then decide on a straightforward and fair allocation method for the orderly release of any domains not taken up in any sunrise. Given the likely demand however, we do feel it necessary to ensure that release is carefully controlled."

Hmmm... yes it has been carefully and well planned afaik, but the underlying strategic decision to not limit registrations simply reduced the pool of prospective buyers to those that can afford it or have the cashflow to register multiple domains.

Secondly, I am not overly convinced about the majority of domains being worth their value - yes hr.co.uk, iq.co.uk or cv.org.uk for example are definitely worth BIG money as they are well used acronyms in mainstream use by punters and professionals alike - the rest... well let's just say the jury is out on excactly what the market value will end up being.

I am not overly surprised at the value some of the domains are already reaching though... this will provide a considerable sum for good causes - which is a good thing and therefore means at least the process will be a success in this sense.

iq is the best buy so far, £9K is small change compared to what it could earn as a decent site - possibly even get some free publicity too on the back of Nominet auctions if you get a site up before the end of the auctions.

I wonder who will get the most traction in the press with their purchase.

Good spot mate I didn't see that, In my opinion Nominet do have a bad habbit sometimes of getting stuck with their ideas and sending stuff for consultation just for the sake of it but ignoring advice that the consultation produces. Hence one of the reasons their is no more PAB.

Looking at those examples of suggestions that were quoted they seem to come from a broad range of wise heads. It is a shame Nominet didn't listen to them. But equally I think the same as you and written in the past about most of these (random letters) being of little real value compared to what they sell for in this auction, obviously excluding iq, hr etc

What I said was who would use uu.co.uk instead of uutaxis.co.uk, you are losing one of your keywords that will bring you up in serps. I also gave the example of OceanFinance.co.uk, their ocean.co.uk redirects to oceanfinance.co.uk not the other way around.

But I guess these buyers are putting their money where their mouths are so fair play to them.
