This is a proper numpty question, but the new laptops do they all just come wireless enabled? ie. turn em on and you can get wireless? and do they work in say a coffee bar in Prague (with wireless )

Been ages since i bought a new laptop - looking now. Any recommendations for a small screen laptop?

Most come with WIFI built in, you turn it on and it will scan for available access points within range, you then either connect to the one you want to use, and enter an access passcode if it is security enabled.

Some will show as unsecured, but then when you launch your browser it may only show free websites until you pay something, this is how Orange works anyway.

Most laptops enable you to turn off WIFI for airplane use and saving the battery when you dont need it.

If you want it smaller it may cost more, set yourself a budget and then to a feature list comparison.

If you travel a lot for example, then good battery life may be more important than a HD DVD player.

Bloody 'ell - your making too much brass lad !!

My budget is £500 - only because i'll leave it in the first bar i come to. Some cheap cheap laptops thou. Think I spent £2k on the last one, most £300 ones are 50000 times more powerful.

Acer are cheap & reliable for work & browsing in my experience and they'll have ones around the £500 mark

Note as well that soon most laptops will have integrated mobile broadband, and there are already some products on the market. Mobile broadband is another option when abroad, although under certain circumstances it can prove very expensive so do your homework first, and I guess you'd have to check coverage for where you're going.

Laptop wise let us know your budget and what's important to you, some quick thoughts from me:

- Vista is a bit of a let down, if you want it make sure your computer has SP1, consider a Mac if you want a better user experience.
- Toshiba, have an air of quality, reflected in the price.
- Dell, very competitive on price, performance can be good too, worth considering although build quality and finish not as good as Toshiba
- HP, some nicely finished, also good on price.
- Acer, cheap and cheerful, customer support poor.

- If you just want internet access and not bothered about having Windows, consider the Asus eee.

go for a Dell Johnny, the entry 15" screen model costs £250, bought the mrs one and she plays her SIMS games on them easy

had a Dell Inspiron 9300 with 17" screen for nearly 4 years, never ever broke down on me, still uses original battery.

have a hunt around the net as well and you may find a discount code or two to make it even cheaper!

A few months ago I bought 25off Dell Vostro 1000's for about £250 ea.

Good, solid and reliable. Got them with XP installed.
512MB, DVD, 1280x800, about 2.5 hours battery. Actually prefered them to the £700 Toshiba I normally carry.

Can recommend the Samsung Q45 if you want something small - good specs, cheap as chips (compared to most of the comparable Sony's etc I was looking at), 12.1" screen, latest dual core, only problem is the reflective screen in bright conditions but it doesn't annoy me too much...

Don't forget that Intel is ceasing production of the C2D chipset very soon. If you wait you could bag a bargain, or pay a lot for the new chipset. Your pocket decides.

GBP 500 is too low but have you considered a Lenovo Thinkpad? Very reliable kit.
