Little help over DAC hosting servers, please

HI,

I would appreciate some advice regarding dedicated servers to be used for DAC hosting/drop catching. I'm not looking for a hosted DAC service because I have extensive experience running my own server and have developed my own software for interfacing with nominet.

I'm looking for a cheap dedicated server/possibly Virtual (I have other service elsewhere so don't need huge specs or massive data transfer), its the connectivity i.e. position/peering relative to nominet that I am most interested in.

I have a list of a few companies from my own research, but would appreciate any advice you'd be willing to share either on this thread or via PM.

Not being funny but why would any dropcatcher in their right mind give out that sort of advice to a potential competitor?

Grant, I'm not asking you to give me your 'secrets' here, or your code/system etc. Just asking regarding general ISP advice.
'Not being funny but', you must be very insecure about the quality of your drop catching set-up if your worried a discussion about server hosting companies is going to affect your chances.

This doesn't sound like 'general' advice, sounds quite specific to catching which is a trade secret by the looks of it!

I'm not insecure at all. If you're convinced by your dropcatching abilities and believe that hosting doesn't affect your chances I recommend you go with the cheapest dedicated server you can find, probably based in the USA.

How about Dedicated Servers by JPstream Internet Services in Japan not bad 9800 Yen - £62?

Its not rocket science to work out that a shorter hop to the dac is going to reduce the time to make a query and get a response, its also easy to deduce where the main players servers are, using standard tools traceroute, ripe lookup, etc. Its easy to find out nominets peering arrangements. A number of ISP advertise on their websites that they are hosting the servers for drop catchers due to their 2ms pings.

I've done the work, just looking to start a conversation about peoples findings. Sorry to have asked.

Before I even looked at hosting, I'd test my script on middle of the road names, see if I can hook them.

Wouldn't you book some low end random names on dropsys/caught and see if you can beat them in a majoroity way ? Once i had a majority win, then I'd be concerned with hosting
