Main site + sub domain

Here's one for you knowledgable folk to offer your advice.

I have a domain name that can offer two different types of product.
Both have decent high search volumes, are niche (and not particularly high end value products but that's by the by).

Is it a good idea to set up one shop on the main domain and then (using a sub domain) set up another shop catering for the alternative end users?

It can be easily implemented but what about serps /google / seo? would one be (negatively) affected by the other?

OR would it be better to have a home page directing the user to another site (for the other items) ?

Or should I just concentrate on one main site?

Depends on the nature of the items and how different they are I'd have said.

Eg if the domain was net.co.uk and you wanted to offer fishing nets and intranet hardware, that'd be different to toothbrush.co.uk offering electric and normal toothbrushes.

Focus on one product area... better to let the site be know for 'something'

Don't redirect for a different product area, find another domain for that & repeat step 1.

Don't use subdomains for store products. They're the spawn of hell. I know serps 'may' not be affected, but I prefer linear urls, and remember the vast majority of users 'think' the same way - left to right.
