I received some bounceback emails to the email address of a site I run indicating that someone has maliciously been mass commenting on blog posts and using the url and email of the site I own.

Could this have an adverse effect on my site?

I know this question and scenario has popped up before as a posible way someone could sabbotage a competitor, but will the new Google changes just discredit these links or is there a change my site could be effected?

Any views on this?

Yep - if there's enough dodgy comments, they could get your site sandboxed...

Not really a great deal you can do about it apart from trying to remove the comments manually (if they've used your email address then you should be able to confirm your identity and remove them).

I'm guessing here, but would getting more quality backlinks help to offset the spam ones?

That's great. Just like being stood at a shop counter trying to flog your wares to all that pass by while you're being F(*cked from behind and someones nicking your stock!!

Not really the point.
